What to Do If You Have a Leaky Sunroof
Sunroofs are a great benefit to have in your car, and the last thing you want to do is find you have a leak to deal with. It can create confusion if you have never had to go through this process, and leaks can occur at any point in your vehicle.
Whether it is a T-top or folding sunroof, here are some suggestions to help identify a leak.
How Do You Know If Your Sunroof Has a Leak?
If you have no experience identifying leaks around a sunroof, it might be more challenging to tell at first. Leaks can occur from multiple issues, including glass replacement that was improperly completed during sunroof repair.
In other cases, the water may go in unexpected areas, so you cannot always assume that it will be apparent when there is a leak.
What Steps Can You Take to Fix a Leaky Sunroof?
Because a leak will cause the water to travel to different areas of the vehicle, you are going to want to look for signs like:
- Finding your floor is damp
- If you are finding that the car smells musty or has developed a mildew odor
- If there's a large amount of condensation or fogging inside the vehicle
Any damage to the windshield can also contribute to water getting in. Start by checking the windshield lining because it may be missing or worn down, and cracks or chips in the glass can also contribute.
Get Your Sunroof Inspected
Once you have completed the inspection on the windshield, you will want to check your sunroof. The same rule applies to the sunroof as the windshield, so you want to check for damage such as cracks or damage on the lining.
You will also want to make sure the sunroof is completely closed because this will help make sure there is a solid seal to prevent water from getting in.
In addition, sunroofs come with drain holes that help redirect water that comes in to flow out of the side of your vehicle. If any of these holes are clogged, this can prevent the excess water from draining and start building up, which can leak into the car.
Avoid Doing This With a Leaky Sunroof
It may seem like a good idea to clean out the drain tubes, but in most cases, this can cause more damage. We recommend using a shop vac with a specialized attachment or bringing your vehicle to a sunroof repair specialist for this scenario.
