How to Keep your Windshield Clean Through Snow, Rain and Fog

Keeping your windshield spick and span is tough in general, but keeping your windshield clean through snow, fog and rain is even more difficult. Not only is it important to keep your car looking nice, but it is crucial for visibility while driving and the safety of others. Here are some easy ways to keep your windshield clean through snow, rain and fog.

Snow

Expecting frost overnight? You may want to let your car idle for a few minutes before leaving which gives your windshield time to defrost, but now you must scrape the snow off your windshield. Avoid this by filling a spray bottle with three-parts vinegar to one-part water and spray on your car windows at night. In the morning, your windshield and windows will be clear of the icy mess. There may require a little bit of scraping, but for the most part it will melt right off! If you forget to spray your car overnight, just spray the mixture on your windows to start and help speed up the melting process. How does this simple and easy fix work? Vinegar contains acetic acid, which lowers the melting point of water, preventing the water from freezing.

No need to purchase water repellent from a retailer — you can either make a simple solution with water and rubbing alcohol or make a repellent that follows more closely to ingredients in store-bought windshield water repellent. This water repellent solution aids greatly with visibility and also makes it easier to remove ice when it forms on your windshield. If you want to make an at-home windshield water repellent, you can do so with a handful of ingredients at a cheap price.

What You Need:

  • Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
  • Filtered water
  • Measuring cup
  • Spray bottle
  • Rag
  • 100 ml graduated cylinder
  • Ethanol
  • Silicone oil or castor oil
  • Graduated cylinder

Simple Solution

  1. Pour half a cup of rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle.
  2. Add 1 cup of filtered water to the spray bottle.
  3. Swirl the bottle to mix the two ingredients. The bottle may feel warm. Wait until it cools before putting on the cap.
  4. Spray the solution onto the exterior of a clean and dry windshield. Use a clean, dry rag to wipe the windshield until it is completely dry.

Fog

This one is fairly simple. Put shaving cream on the inside of your vehicles windows and then wipe it off! Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients that commercial defoggers contain. Additionally, it leaves a layer on the window to keep the fog off! Another solution would be to buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in your vehicle. When the windows fog, rub them with the eraser and you will have a fog-free car.

Fog

These easy tricks will have you on the road in no time. Preparing your vehicle for the constantly changing weather is just as important as being safe on the roads. If your car is not ready, then you are not ready. Similar to cooking. If you don’t let the oven heat up adequately, your cookies will not cook properly. If your vehicle is not fully ready, it may tend to make things difficult while traveling.
